Web Networking: Computers Introducing People to People

Web Networking: Computers Introducing People to People

We have all heard the proverb, “two heads are better than one.”  The one who spawned this maxim, most likely did not live long enough to make it into the age of computers, along with the ability to link two, ten, one thousand, or more heads together through the use of web networking.  There are many web friendly thoroughfares that grant users the chance to talk to one another to share ideas.

How to Web the Words Together to Define Social Networking

Some of us see the advantageous implications of social networking in relation to business, some of us may just be lonely looking for some online friends, either way, social networking can aid in aggregating some conversation on some shared interests.  There were but a few ways to get some social networking going in the beginning, such as Bulletin Boards, but there has been a huge influx and the opportunities to reach out and text someone is increasing.  The technologies supplied include weblogs, social networking Web sites, and geographical mapping.

Weblogs are becoming increasingly popular within the online community.  The most general topics or those relating to niche interests can be showcased with content on related information.  The comment system can encourage others to continue to check out your blog and connected site, as well as turn others on to your blog/site.

Social networking sites are taking the notion of weblogs a bit further.  People can discover your site/blog, relate resources, and foster friendships with others.  These sites are more niche-specific, but building continuing relations with others within your niche can serve to be very useful to a business.  In one day, you can collect countless future contacts with others that are interested and provide information in your field of expertise. Geographical mapping adds another spin on social networking by allowing users to introduce their resources and links to other blogs/sites.  This will make it easier to generate traffic to your site as people may serendipitously find your site through another contact.  Since most people on the social networking sites have a common thread of interest, this happens most frequently.

Step into my Parlour….

Weblogs are really creating a social explosion on the Internet.  New technologies and applications are being produced as designers are realizing the social and business potential of social networking.  Weblogs are not just for chatting; there are business strides to be made through sharing and commenting on intellect.

Social networking once lacked context, but weblogs initiate mutual intellectual attraction.  They offer a virtual live stage for people to project the content of their minds on a daily basis and to build on-going commentary and debate on germane topics.  Along with the social and business augmentation possibilities, blogging software has ushered in other important tools.

A business can gain a feel of how they are matching up amongst their peers through the comment system.  A blog can generate hundreds of comments a day if popular, and requires very little maintenance and overhead.  The maintenance really entails keeping the fresh content coming.

Automatic content aggregation allows for all of the users of the blog to stay on the same page.  If there are new resources or pages of content to be uploaded, they can be immediately aggregated by all of the blog members.  This propels even more acts of blogging because all members will have the same information to draw opinions and insight from.

The option of blogrolling allows users of the blog to turn on people to sites.  Since people of the same blog are most likely going to have similar interests, they will be most likely to share interest in sites.  The automated list allows the ability to keep things fresh, so sites that have recently been used and popular will be at the top and those who have been neglected, will become out of turn.

Trackback is used to exchange and add specific content between different sites.  Pingback allows for web site authors to be notified when someone links to their site.  Pingback is looked upon as being more organized and specific than trackback.

The potential for weblogs are just recently being realized.  Especially in relation to business, this is a great way to market your business know-how, which is a less abrasive and slimy way of letting people get to know the mind behind the business.  People will visit your blog and website if you establish your sense of intellect.

Birds of a Feather….

A huge benefit of those partaking in social networking is finding others with similar interests and part of the same industries.  A friend of one site can invite you onto another site.  Once you gain access to the next site, you have the potential of meeting more friends with like things in mind and their friends.  The possibilities of making contacts are endless.

A networking site may be free or require a fee to be paid.  If there is a fee, it is usually a small one.  In considering the inadvertent business revenue that can be accumulated, it is a worthwhile venture.  Revenue may come out of participation, but also the original reference may to, “two heads are better than one” comes into play.  You can acquire insights from others and feedback that you can apply to your business.

The number of sites are growing, and this seems to be disconcerting to some who suppose the business advantages will start to diminish as the number of networking sites grow.  The technology of enabling surfers to get to other related sites is growing, so the number of sites may not be such a detriment as long as the perusal and utilization of a good number of sites related to one’s business is taken advantage of.

Tale of the Tape

Geographical mapping is another attractive aspect of social networking.  Geographical mapping in a social context means that instead of mapping by machine, mapping is done for the location of the individual.  GeoURL is a provider of this service that takes your coordinates and compares them to web sites and blogs of others in your area to improve your networking capabilities on a social scale.  This has potential benefits for business owners who can check out to see what the competition is up to either to foster a more friendly relationship or to get the jump on them.

Question Everything

One will only get out of social networking what they put into it.  It is great to read other blogs and read the cascade of comments that follow, but this also presents an opportunity to get involved.  If you do not feel as if you have something especially insightful to say, at least ask some questions of others who you feel have exhibited insight.  The existence of social networking enables anyone with a computer and online capabilities to ask everyone out there on the Web anything they desire.  Of course one will have to take into a account the validity of any response, but most people in the same circles are there to gain experience and insight as well, and most likely will not mind to offer their piece of mind.
