Google talk allows you to instant message, email, and call your friends for free. The only newsworthy point I see here is that Google will now be competing with Skype for free VOIP calling. If you have some technical savvy you can save a ton of money by using Skype or Google Talk to call your friends (even if they're overseas).

THINGS NOT TO DO WHEN MARKETING YOURSELF IN FORUMS
Hanging out in forums within your industry can turn out to be one of your best marketing tools if done right. It's especially important for new sites to get out their into forums and make friends and spread the word about their product/service. But don't get started until you know the rules or else you may make enemies faster then friends. This article provides a nice list of things NOT to do in forums.
MARKETING: TARGET YOUR EMAIL
This is a great article that will help you with your email newsletters. The key points that are made:
1. Know what your customers are interested in
2. Tailor your newsletter to focus on that interest
3. Get emotional.... promote your newsletter in an exciting way (if you can't get excited about it then your customers won't either)
4. "Statistics prove that only 20-36% of emails sent get opened (these are the ones that make it past the spam filters)." In my opinion, this means that you better give the user useful information that they want. Don't just talk about your new product or service.
5. Be focused.... keep to your newsletter topic each week. Just because you're a Yankees fan and they won the world series doesn't mean that you're customers care about that. They'll get their sports news from elsewhere.
